Ms. Gong Qi is a consultant with Hui Zhong Law Firm, based in its Beijing office. She advises on a broad range of maritime, shipping, and international trade matters. Before joining Hui Zhong, Ms. Gong practiced at Guangdong Jinghai (Beijing) Law Firm and worked in-house at Hanjin Shipping (Hong Kong).
Leveraging her unique blend of frontline shipping industry experience and deep dispute resolution expertise, Ms. Gong handles complex commercial disputes, spanning contracts of carriage, marine insurance, ship finance and leasing, international trade, and independent guarantees. She regularly represents state-owned enterprises, multinational corporations, shipping lines, and insurers before the Supreme People's Court, maritime courts, and leading arbitral institutions such as CIETAC, BAC, SCIA, and HKIAC. Ms. Gong's exceptional skill is widely recognized, with many of the cases she has handled being designated as guiding or typical cases by the Supreme People's Court or included in the UNCITRAL Case Law Database.
- Represented a large state-owned enterprise in handling a maritime cargo transport contract dispute with a Singapore shipping company at the Supreme People's Court, Tianjin High Court, and Tianjin Maritime Court. After going through first instance, second instance, and retrial, successfully defended and won the case. This case ranked first in the maritime trial thematic guiding cases published by the Supreme People's Court on November 26, 2024, with the case number being Guiding Case No. 230.
- Represented a Singapore trading company at the Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court in Zhejiang Province, applying for recognition and enforcement of an arbitration award made by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC). This case was selected by the Supreme People's Court on January 16, 2024, as one of the typical cases for judicial review of arbitration.
- Represented an American investment company at the Shanghai Financial Court, applying for recognition and enforcement of an arbitration award made by the International Chamber of Commerce International Arbitration Court (ICC). This case was officially included in the legislative case law system of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) in December 2024, with the case number CLOUT case 2176.
- Represented a famous international insurance and reinsurance company at the Supreme People's Court in handling a retrial of a maritime insurance contract dispute with a Chinese shipping company. Successfully corrected the erroneous judgments from the first and second instances, achieving a complete victory.
- Represented a well-known insurance company at the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission in handling a maritime-related insurance contract dispute involving an amount as high as $380 million. The case had a significant subject matter and was extremely complex, ultimately assisting the client in successfully defending and winning the case.
- Represented a financing leasing company at the Shenzhen International Arbitration Court, Shanghai Maritime Court, and Shanghai High People's Court in handling ship financing leasing disputes and related litigation with the lessee and third parties. This case spanned arbitration and multi-level court litigation procedures, ultimately helping the client win in all stages.
